DESCENDANTS OF: William Oats (b. 1811) and Mary DeBerry (b. 1815) AS RELATED TO: Robert Andrew Walker (their great-great-great-grandson)
Updated April 28, 2009
The number of periods preceding the asterisk (*) before a name indicates to which generation the person belongs. The first generation is the William Oats, (b. 1811). His daughter, Mary Elizabeth Oats, my great great grandmother, and her brothers, are preceded by a single period and then the asterisk, indicating that he belongs to the second generation. Phillip Lorenzo Walker (1870-1965), my great grandfather, is preceded by 2 periods and then the asterisk, and belongs to the third generation, etc. My generation is preceded by 5 periods and an asterisk, thus indicating we are the 6th generation to follow William Oats. All relationships are calculated as related to me. Add or subtract "greats" as appropriate. If an individual has had more than one spouse, the first marriage is listed first, followed by all children of that marriage, and then the second spouse is listed, and the children of that marriage are then listed, and so on. The name sometimes appears spelled as OATS, and sometimes as OATES. Some believe the following to be the origin of the name (which is English): An Odo is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and refers to Bishop Odo, brother of Robert of Mortain.. He was banished from England in 1088 by William the Conquerer after an unsucessful attempt to overthrow the King. It is believed that people named their children Odo in honor of him, and from that the name Oates or Oats may have developed.

* William Oats (?-___-1811) - m. Mary DeBerry (?-___-1815) - (GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER)
Born in Virginia. Recorded in the 1850 and 1860 censuses as living in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia. Information from Glenn Smith, Muskogee, Oklahoma, March 5, 2001. The William Oats farm was very near the Phillip Walker farm. Most of the information on this family from Glenn Smith.
. * James F. Oats (?-___-1837) - (GREAT-GREAT-GREAT UNCLE)
Probably born in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia.
. * Robert W. Oats (16-Feb-1841) - (17-Sep-1921) m. Louisa Wilson (?-___-1845) - (?-___-1908) (GREAT-GREAT-GREAT UNCLE)
Probably born in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia. Information from Glenn Smith, Muskogee, Oklahoma, 3 5 2001. Informant: W.B. Hawse, Rio, WV. Buried in Lutheran Ebenezer Cemetery in Rio, Hardy County, West Virginia. Apparently served with Philip Henry Snarr in the same company (Capt. Stump’s), who was the father-in-law of Mary Elizabeth Oat’s son, Phillip Lorenzo Walker. Confederate Civil War Veteran. 18th Virginia Cavalry C.S.A, Company B. Lt.
. * Mary Elizabeth "Elizabeth" Oats (?-___-1844) - (before 1883) m. Nathaniel W. Walker (4-Oct-1834) - (15-May-1890) (GREAT-GREAT-GRANDMOTHER)
Probably born in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia. Data from Glenn Smith, 3/1/2001. Seems certain now that Mary Elizabeth Oats or Oates is Elizabeth Walker. 1860 census indicates a date of birth of 1842, other sources say 1844, gravestone says "about 1834." That date may have just been a supposition based on Nathaniel’s date of birth. Buried in Rock Oak (Walker) Cemetery, Rock Oak, West Virginia. Since Nathaniel remarried in 1883, it is very likely that Mary Elizabeth Oates was deceased by that time. Nathaniel Walker was a farmer, and lived next door to his father, Phillip Walker, on the farm in Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Nathaniel's tombstone is shared with an Elizabeth. It is now not clear if this is his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Oates, or his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Winchester. The stone lists only "Elizabeth," and gives the date of birth as "about 1834." Mary Elizabeth Oates appears to have been born about a decade after that, so it may be that it is Mary Elizabeth Winchester buried with Nathaniel. However, since many of Nathaniel's and Mary Oates' children are buried there, it seems more likely that it is Mary Elizabeth Oates buried there. Those who had the replacement stone made may simply not have been sure of her birth date.
. . * Amanda Walker (?-___-1865) - (GREAT-GREAT AUNT)
Born in Inkerman, near Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Only learned of her on 3/1/2001. Listed as being 15 in the 1880 federal census and 5 in the 1870 federal census.
. . * William Isaac "Will" Walker (11-Dec-1866) - (9-Jun-1954) m. ? (GREAT-GREAT UNCLE)
Born in Inkerman, near Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Lived in Washington, D.C. Address acquired from Sandra Oldaker from papers of Venus Virginia Dove Walker 9/11/1993 On 9/19/1992, Marie Walker Oldaker recalled his name, and recalled that he would return to Cumberland from Washington, D.C. on periodic visits. Pauline Walker Wetzel confirmed on 6/2/1993. Dates from Anna Snarr Walker's bible. Was a gardener and worked for Gabriel Heater, a news commentator in Washington, DC. Marie Oldaker say he was short vs. P.L. Walker, who was tall. 5'5", 150 lbs - from Jim Walker.
. . . * Fannie Walker m. ? Combs (FIRST COUSIN, TWICE REMOVED)
Fannie Combs was definitely a Walker relative. On 9/19/1992 Marie Walker Oldaker stated that she believed Fannie Combs may have been Will Walker's daughter. A grave stone in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Rock Oak, WV, is marked Ada F. Combs, and is the only Combs in the cemetery, but the dates don't fit. It is not definite that Fannie Combs was Will Walker's daughter. Perhaps she was the daughter of Molly Walker and Jimmy Heare.
. . . * Warden "Wardie" Walker m. Madeline ? (FIRST COUSIN, TWICE REMOVED)
Worked for the U.S. Government. Was killed in Washington, DC and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the main gate close to the wall about half way down (info. from Jim Walker). Will Walker made his home with Wardie in his last few years.
. . * Mary "Molly" Walker (?-___-1868) - m. Jimmy Heare (1870's) - (GREAT-GREAT AUNT)
Born in Inkerman, near Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. She and her husband, Jimmy Heare once owned the store in Kirby, WV. Their living quarters were on the right side of the store. Information from Herman Walker, 1993. Jim Walker and Marie Walker Oldaker confirmed this information. Both visited them as a child. Dates from U.S. censuses, via Dorthea Clymer.
. . . * Lucy Heare m. Mr. Lupton (FIRST COUSIN, TWICE REMOVED)
Lived on the left side of the store in Kirby after it was closed. She was a reporter for the "Hampshire Review" weekly paper, which was printed in Romney, WV. She was close to or cared for Molly and Jimmy. Jim Walker remembers her. He was young at the time, but believes she may have been Molly and Jimmy's daughter.
. . * Phillip Lorenzo "Lo" Walker (30-Apr-1870) - (17-Feb-1965) m. (21-Jun-1898) Anna "Annie" Catherine Snarr (1--Jun-1873) - (29-Oct-1958) (GREAT-GRANDFATHER)
Born in Inkerman, near Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Rock Oak, Hardy County, WV. Stood 6'2" and weighed 240 lbs at his prime (information from Jim Walker). Spent the last years of his life in a nursing home in Cumberland, MD. Home on Roberts Street torn down in 1960's, a victim of urban renewal. Some debate about the spelling of his middle name. His obituary says Lorenza, while Jim Walker says it is Lorenzo. A relative (aunt or uncle, I’m not sure which) buried in Rock Oak Cemetery, Rock Oak, Hardy Co., WV is named Lorenza Walker. Confirmed Lorenzo (or Lorenza) as Phillip's uncle (or aunt), 11/27/2000. Lorenza/Lorenzo is an Italian name. LorenzA is the feminine form, while LorenzO is the masculine. However, the Walkers, including myself, being good (West) Virginia hillbillies, may not have paid any attention to such conventions.
. . . * Cecil Jordan "Happy" Walker (26-Sep-1899) - (28-Oct-1971) m. (19-Oct-1922) Flossie Cummings "Cummie" Rittenhouse (27-Oct-1897) - (12-Jun-1982) (GREAT UNCLE)
Died the same day as his younger brother Philip W. Walker. Cecil died at 10:30 a.m., Philip at 1 p.m. Philip did not know that Cecil had died. Cecil was a diabetic and had to inject himself with insulin. 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, member in Clarksburg and Wheeling. Shriner, American Numismatic Assoc., Mountaineer Coin Club. She said it was coincidence that Marie Walker Oldaker's first child had the same name. The baby was probably stillborn, but at any rate, he did not live beyond the day of his birth.
