The number of periods preceding the asterisk (*) before a name indicates to which generation the person belongs. The first generation is Benedict Zimmerman (1825-18__). His son, John Zimmerman, my great great grandfather, and his brothers and sisters, are preceded by a single period and then the asterisk, indicating that they belong to the second generation. Samuel Franklin Zimmerman (1886-1959), my great grandfather, is preceded by two periods and then the asterisk, and belongs to the third generation, etc. My generation is preceded by 5 periods and an asterisk, thus indicating we are the 6th generation to follow Benedict Zimmerman. All relationships are calculated as related to me. Add or subtract "greats" as appropriate. If an individual has had more than one spouse, the first marriage is listed first, followed by all children of that marriage, and then the second spouse is listed, and the children of that marriage are then listed, and so on. Most of the descendants of Benedict and Mary Zimmerman lived or still live in Indiana. The exceptions are Benedict’s and Mary’s son, John Zimmerman and his descendants. Most of them lived or live in the western Potomac Valley of West Virginia and Maryland. Many thanks to David Allen Zimmerman, my second cousin, twice removed (the grandson of my great-great-grandfather's brother Frederick), of Yoder, Indiana, and to his son, Todd Zimmerman, for much of the information on the Indiana Zimmermans. Much new information on the Maryland/West Virginia Zimmermans has come from my second cousin, once removed, Fran Zimmerman Delaney, of Stephenson, Virginia, and, via the Steckman connections, from my third cousin, Becci Hartsock-Haines of Oldtown, Maryland. "He first appears in the 1860 census in Jackson Twp Miami Co. IN. He and his wife are 35 yrs. old. Census says he and Mary are from Switzerland. 1870 census says he and family (except John) are in Harrison Twp, town of North Grove, Miami Co., IN. 1880 census mentions family, but no Benedict. I assume he died sometime in the 1870's." -- David Zimmerman, Ft. Wayne, IN. The spelling of Vaught appears variously as Vaught, Voght, and Watt. As pronounced in German, they would all sound approximately the same ("w" is sounded as "v" in German). Benedict may have been a Civil War veteran, according to David Zimmerman. Mary Vaught was the daughter of Gottfried Vogt and Anna Larish, who were likely born around 1800, apparently in Germany. Mary was born in Germany, and died in Elkhart, Indiana. Another source lists the date of Benedict’s birth as 1819.

Probably born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, where his parents were married. Lived in Oldtown, MD. May be buried in Oldtown Cemetery, Oldtown, MD. If so, his grave is unmarked. Could potentially be buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Cumberland, MD, where his son, Samuel Franklin Zimmerman, is buried. Date of birth and place of Birth from David Zimmerman of Yoder, Indiana; descendant of Frederick Zimmerman, John’s younger brother. John may have been a Civil War veteran (a union drummer boy) according to his granddaughter, Elma Pauline Zimmerman Wolfe. John Zimmerman was at one time a lock keeper on the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal, which passes through Oldtown. All of John and Elanora's children appear to have been born in or near Oldtown, Allegany County, MD.

It is the lock just upstream of Oldtown, not the Carter lock, which is right in Oldtown, MD.

Named for his mother, Elma Pauline Zimmerman Wolfe. WWII Naval Veteran, USS Cabot (CVL-28) in the Pacific. Recipient of the Purple Heart, wounded in Kamikaze attack on the Cabot. His ship was hit by a Kamikaze attack at Samar off the Philippines on November 25, 1944. Two suicide planes hit the ship, and 36 men were killed. He was thrown a large portion of the ship's length by the subsequent explosion. As a result, he lost the hearing in one of his ears. Lived in Livonia, Michigan.

Elma Pauline Zimmerman Wolfe was in possession of a photograph of John and Elizabeth. She was unable, however, to locate it in May of 1993, although she showed it to me in May of 1992. He was a resident of Hagerstown, Maryland at the time in which electricity first came to that city. It is reported that he was against it, and built a barrier to prevent the neighbor's electric light from shining on his house. 1880 Census says he lived in Hancock, MD. John’s birthplace is listed as Virignia in the 1880 U.S.Census.
