The number of periods preceding the asterisk (*) before a name indicates to which generation the person belongs. The first generation is John Wocker (ca. 1770 - fl. 1830). The second generation is the original Henry (Wocker) Walker, born in 1776. His son, Phillip Walker, my great great great grandfather, and his brothers and sisters, are preceded by two periods and then the asterisk, indicating that he belongs to the third generation. Phillip L. Walker (1870-1965), my great grandfather, is preceded by four periods and then the asterisk, and belongs to the fifth generation, etc. My generation is preceded by 7 periods and an asterisk, thus indicating we are the 8th generation to follow the original Henry Walker. All relationships are calculated as related to me. Add or subtract "greats" as appropriate. If an individual has had more than one spouse, the first marriage is listed first, followed by all children of that marriage, and then the second spouse is listed, and the children of that marriage are then listed, and so on. LDS refers to the Church of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). Their web site maintains records on the genealogy of many American families. Elizabeth Barb, the great great great granddaughter of Piters Barb, married Henry (Wocker) Walker. Frances Elizabeth Sheetz, the great granddaughter of Matthias Sheetz, Sr., married Phillip Walker, the son of Henry W. Walker and grandson of John Wocker, in Shenandoah County, VA.

Data from LDS, 3 12 2001. John Wocker is the earliest identified ancestor in my Walker/Wocker line. His son Henry appears to be the first to have used the Walker spelling, though he was born Henry Wocker. John was christened in the Lutheran Church in Old Goshenhoppen, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1731, and so was presumably born there, or in the near vicinity. He and Margaret Fischback were married in that same church in 1752. At some point he migrated to Shenandoah County, Virginia. His son, Henry, was born in Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 1776, so it must have been after 1776 that John Wocker relocated his family to Shenandoah County, Virginia. John Wocker’s contemporary, and my 6th great grandfather, Johannes Hoedl or Hottle, made the same migration to Virginia in about 1750. Johannes Hottle originally settled in Bucks County, PA, which adjoins Montgomery County, PA. I believe the name Wocker is of German origin, which would fit with other settlers of this area, but I am currently investigating that. At any rate, the name Wocker became anglicized as Walker. Others with the name of Wacker also became anglicized as Walker, and I suspect that Wacker and Wocker are two different forms of the same family name. Wacker (German): nickname for a bold or energetic person, from Middle High German wacker ‘fresh’, ‘lively’, ‘brave’, ‘valiant’.

Buried in Hottel-Keller Cemetery, Mt. Olive, VA, a few 10's of yards from Johannes Hottel and his descendants. Perhaps named for the old Augusta County, VA, which no longer exists, but is recalled by Augusta, in present Hampshire County, WV. Lived and worked as a teacher in Hardy County, WV. Buried in Hottel-Keller Cemetery, Mt. Olive, Shenandoah County, VA. Was a veteran of the Mexican War. Lost the used of one leg during the war. From Dorthea Clymer: "…on Augustus Walker from HISTORY OF GRANT AND HARDY COUNTIES, WEST VIRGINIA, by E. L. Judy, p. 27: "Boarding Around . . . An early practice of Teachers was to visit and board with the Parents of school children, one object being to encourage lesson study at the different homes, and a rule established was that this should continue while one candle burned out; but some of the boys followed a speedier way to finish the nightly job by inserting a hot darning needle in the candle to hasten its melting. Incidents Reported by Henry Hisghman . . .That Augustus Walker taught at Stony Ridge near Lost River, where the Methodist Church now stands, and had to cross the River on Slab Benches supported by logs and that one cold morning some of the prankish boys set some of the logs on slippery rocks and this caused him to fall in the icy cold water, so he had to return to his boarding place nearby and get dry clothes." She continues: "Augustus Walker, born 30 Jul 1825, Middletown, VA, enlisted for the Mexican War at Strasburg, VA. The record states he was 21, had grey eyes, dark hairand a fair complexion. He was 5'8-1/2", enlisted on 13 Feb 1847, and was discharged at Ft. Monroe, VA 19 Aug 1848. He served as a private in the 4th Regiment of Artillary, Co. C. According to a deposition dated 7 Mar 1874, 'on the last day of fighting at the City of Mexico (Sept. 13, 1847) he received a permanent jwound on the left knee by the explosion of a shell or a musket ball, and that said wound was permanent in its character when received and that he received his medical treatment in the Hospital at the City of Mexico that by reason of said wound, his leg is rendered numb or helpless after walking, the parts being contracted, that since leaving the said service, this applicant has resided in the County of Shenandoah in the State of Virginia, and his occupation has been School Teacher, that prior to his entry into the service, he was a man of good, sound physical health being when enrolled a sound man in every respect, that now he is one half or more disabled . . . Three of Henry's sons were associated with the furnaces at Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah County, VA, and so were in the iron business. Born Henry Wocker, according to LDS records, and later changed his name to Walker. Date of birth estimated from his date of christening, May 12, 1776. Buried in Rock Oak (Walker) Cemetery, Hardy County, WV. Tombstone states he was 69 at the time of his death. Grave visited on July 7, 1994. On 11/27/2000, confirmed that Phillip (spelling is given with two "l"s) was Nathaniel's father, that his wife was Elizabeth Sheetz, and that he was born in 1807. SHEETZ is of German origin. The orginal spelling is Schütz (see Part III below). Frances Elizabeth Sheetz was the daughter of Henry Sheetz of Shenandoah County, Virginia. There are Sheetz's now living in the general area, for example, in Keyser, WV. How these Sheetz's may be related to Elizabeth is unknown. Phillip Walker was a farmer, and lived next door to his son, Nathaniel Walker, on the farm in Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Phillip and Frances were married in Shenandoah County, VA, but eventually owned a farm in Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. See part III below for the ancestry of Frances Elizabeth Sheetz. Phillip's son Nathaniel is named as an heir to his father's estate in a will dated 1880. The will also lists his sons Henry H., Philip and Lorenzo (Lorenza?) as heirs. It also lists a Jemima as an heir. The only known Jemima Walker at this time was the daughter of Phillip's uncle, James Walker, and hence Phillip's first cousin.

Buried in Rock Oak (Walker) Cemetery, Hardy County, WV. Grave found on 4/10/1994 by Bill and Sandy Oldaker. It listed the dates of birth, though it did not list a date of death. The stone lists Elizabeth's birth date as "about 1834," but census data suggests 1844. Visited grave on July 7, 1994. The stone appears to be a later replacement stone. Oates (or Oats) is a common name in the area. Since Nathaniel remarried in 1883, it is very likely that Mary Elizabeth Oates was deceased by that time. Nathaniel Walker was a farmer, and lived next door to his father, Phillip Walker, on the farm in Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Named as an heir to his father's estate in a will dated 1880. Will also lists his brothers Henry H., Philip and Lorenzo as heirs. It also lists a Jemima as an heir. The only known Jemima Walker at this time was the daughter of Phillip's uncle, James Walker, and hence Phillip's first cousin.

Known only from the 1870 and 1880 Federal censuses of Hardy County, WV. None of Phillip Lorenzo Walker's descendants have ever mentioned her. I suspect she died young. An Amanda Walker is buried in Rock Oak (Walker) Cemetery in Hardy County, WV. I had previously believed this stone to be that of Nathaniel's sister Amanda, but it may be his daughter. The stone bears only a name, no dates.

Address acquired from Sandra Oldaker from papers of Venus Virginia Dove Walker 9/11/1993 On 9/19/1992, Marie Walker Oldaker recalled his name, and recalled that he would come to Cumberland from Washington, D.C. on periodic visits. Pauline Walker Wetzel confirmed on 6/2/1993. Dates from Anna Snarr Walker's bible. Was a gardener and worked for Gabriel Heater, a news commentator in Washington, DC. Marie Oldaker say he was short vs. P.L. Walker, who was tall. 5'5", 150 lbs - from Jim Walker.

Fannie Combs was definitely a Walker relative. On 9/19/1992 Marie Walker Oldaker stated that she believed Fannie Combs may have been Will Walker's daughter. A grave stone in Mt. Olive Cemetery is marked Ada F. Combs, and is the only Combs in the cemetery, but the dates don't fit. It is not definite that Fannie Combs was Will Walker's daughter. Perhaps she was the daughter of Molly Walker and Jimmie Heare.

Worked for the U.S. Government. Was killed in Washington, DC and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the main gate close to the wall about half way down (info. from Jim Walker). Will Walker made his home with Wardie in his last few years.

Born in Inkerman, near Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. She and her husband, Jimmy Heare once owned the store in Kirby, WV. Their living quarters were on the right side of the store. I am not sure on the spelling of her husband's name. Information from Herman Walker, 1993. Jim Walker and Marie Walker Oldaker confirmed this information. Both visited them as a child. First name and date of birth from 1870 and 1880 Federal censuses.

Lived on the left side of the store in Kirby, WV after it was closed. (The store is still open today, but no longer operated by Walker relatives.) She was a reporter for the "Hampshire Review" weekly paper, which was printed in Romney, WV. She was close to or cared for Molly and Jimmy. Jim Walker remembers her. He was young at the time, but believes she may have been Molly and Jimmy's daughter.

Born in Inkerman, near Bean Settlement, Hardy County, WV. Buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Rock Oak, Hardy County, WV. Stood 6'2" and weighed 240 lbs at his prime (information from Jim Walker). Spent the last years of his life in a nursing home in Cumberland, MD. Home on Roberts Street torn down in 1960's, a victim of urban renewal. Some debate about the spelling of his middle name. His obituary says Lorenza, while Jim Walker says it is Lorenzo. A relative (aunt or uncle, I’m not sure which) buried in Rock Oak Cemetery, Rock Oak, Hardy Co., WV is named Lorenza Walker. Confirmed Lorenzo (or Lorenza) as Phillip's uncle (or aunt), 11/27/2000. Lorenza/Lorenzo is an Italian name. LorenzA is the feminine form, while LorenzO is the masculine. However, the Walkers, including myself, being good (West) Virginia hillbillies, may not have paid any attention to such conventions. The name Lorenzo apparently is for Lorenzo Dowd, a 19th Century Methodist Evangelist. Many Methodist families (such as the Walkers were) named children for Rev. Dowd. No doubt Lorenza and Lorenzo are derived from this. The name appears at least three times in our lineage.

These two had always been closer to each other than their brothers Jacob and Herman. Cecil died at 10:30 a.m., Philip at 1 p.m. Philip did not know that Cecil had died. Cecil was a diabetic and had to inject himself with insulin. 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, member in Clarksburg and Wheeling. Shriner, American Numismatic Assoc., Mountaineer Coin Club. Worked for Maust Coal and Coke Co., Clarksburg. Previously insurance business in Cumberland MD and Clarksburg, WV

He operated the sprayer plates that controlled the flow of oil into the ship’s electric generators. Battle station was on the 40 mm. guns. (Information given to me from the petty officer he worked for). Received WWII Victory Medal, American Area Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal. Electrician for B&O (now CSX) Yards in Cumberland, MD. Built his own house in Wiley Ford, WV. Avid hunter and classical music fan. Lived most of his life in Wiley Ford, WV, even though he was born and died in Cumberland, MD. He was an amateur wood carver, creating bas-relief sculptures in wood, concentrating primarily on nature scenes or objects from nature. Several of these carvings are still existent, in possession of close relatives and descendants.

It is known that Jacob and Virginia Walker had a third child, younger than Marie. Venus Virginia Dove Walker told me, in approximately 1969, that the baby's name was William Lee Walker, that he was buried in Keyser, WV, and that he was several years younger than Marie. She said it was coincidence that Marie Walker Oldaker's first child had the same name. The baby was probably stillborn, but at any rate, he did not live beyond the day of his birth. Marie Walker Oldaker told me in 1995 that the baby was lost after Venus Virginia Dove Walker was knocked down on the street by a drunken man.

I only learned of Nathaniel's second wife on April 1, 2001, from Dorthea Clymer. She is known to have outlived him. Nathaniel's tombstone is shared with an Elizabeth. It is now not clear if this is his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Oates, or his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Winchester. The stone lists only "Elizabeth," and gives the date of birth as "about 1834." Mary Elizabeth Oates appears to have been born about a decade after that, so it may be that it is Mary Elizabeth Winchester buried with Nathaniel. However, since many of Nathaniel's and Mary Oates' children are buried there, it seems more likely that it is Mary Elizabeth Oates buried there. Those who had the replacement stone made may simply not have been sure of her birth date.

Confirmed as Nathaniel Walker's sibling 11/27/2000. His/her tombstone bears an inscription reading "835 days". Visited grave on July 7, 1994. Tombstone says Lorenza, but other sources give the spelling as Lorenzo. Lorenza/Lorenzo is an Italian name. LorenzA is the feminine form, while LorenzO is the masculine. However, the Walkers, including myself, being good (West) Virginia hillbillies, may not have paid any attention to such conventions. Phillip Walker's will appears to say "Lorenzo," though the tombstone reads "Lorenza." The name Lorenzo apparently is for Lorenzo Dowd, a 19th Century Methodist Evangelist. Many Methodist families (such as the Walkers were) named children for Rev. Dowd. No doubt Lorenza and Lorenzo are derived from this. The name appears at least three times in our lineage.
Rebecca Walker Nordyke, a descendant of Lorenza’s brother Henry, lists the name as Lorenzo. From her I learned that Lorenzo, like his brothers Henry and Nathaniel, was a Confederate soldier. Like Nathaniel, Lorenzo belonged to the 33rd Virginia Infantry Regiment of the Stonewall Brigade. From Rebecca, I learned that the 33rd Virginia Regimental History lists the following information about Lorenzo:

Henry's children from same source. All of Henry H. Walker's children appear to have been born in Wardensville, Hardy County, WV, where Henry lived.
Rebecca Walker Nordyke, of Wichita, Kansas, a descendant of Henry’s, notes some variation in his date of birth. Various sources list it anywhere between 1827 and 1835. His tombstone in Wardensville, WV states his birthdate as November, 1829. He was a brick mason and farmer. He built the Romney, WV School for the Deaf and Blind. Like his brothers Lorenzo and Nathaniel, he was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in the 18th Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army. Apparently captured and paroled April 25, 1865. Described as having a fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, 5’3".

"Schütze" means "rifleman" or "hunter" in German, and is the lowest rank in the German Army, corresponding to the rank of "private" in the U.S. Army. My friend, Ullrich Gottschalk of Germany, writes me as follows: "You are right about Schütz, it is a rather known name. A Schütze is a soldier. It is the very lowest rank. Our beginners in the army are starting as a 'Schütze.'"
