DESCENDANTS OF: ? Hödl AS RELATED TO: Robert Andrew Walker (his 7th great - grandson)

 Updated April 28, 2009

The number of periods preceding the asterisk (*) before a name indicates to which generation the person belongs. The first generation is an unknown Hoedl or Hödl. His son, Johannes (John) Hottel (Hoedl), my 6th great grandfather, and his brother, Ulrich, are preceded by a single period and then the asterisk, indicating that he belongs to the second generation (and the first generation in North America. My generation is preceded by 9 periods and an asterisk, thus indicating we are the 9th generation to follow Johannes Hottel, or the tenth following Johannes’ father. All relationships are calculated as related to me. Add or subtract "greats" as appropriate. If an individual has had more than one spouse, the first marriage is listed first, followed by all children of that marriage, and then the second spouse is listed, and the children of that marriage are then listed, and so on. Most of the information on the Hottels is published in History of the Descendants of John Hottel (1930) by W.D. and L.M. Huddle. Reprinted by the Higginson Book Co. Salem, MA. Below are listed only those ancestors and relatives of most immediate concern to me. Many, many more can be found in the book. Substantial new information is becoming available, and some of that is now incorporated here. I am a direct descendant of both Anna Barbara Hottel and Johann Carl Hottel. Because of peculiarities of my software, descendants of Anna Barbara Hottel are listed first as if descendants of my 6th great aunt. Descendants of Johann Carl Hottel are listed first as if descendants of my 5th great grandfather. After marriage of Elizabeth Keller and Philip Henry Snarr, names are listed under both the Anna and Johann Carl lines. Both sets of relationships are correct. Names of Johannes Hottel's children given as now listed on the Hottel Keller memorial web site, August, 2001, which differs from the original edition of the History of the Descendants of John Hottel. Dates of birth for most of Johannes Hottel's children also differ from those listed in the first edition of History of the Descendants of John Hottel For example, Hottel Keller memorial web site lists Anna Barbara's date of birth as 1713. If this is true, then Johannes Hottel was born at least a few years before See the Hottel Keller Memorial web site for more of this newer information:

* ? Hödl m. ? (7th GREAT GRANDFATHER)

The name is variously spelled Hödl, Höedl, or Hoedl. In the United States this was transfigured most commonly to Hottel, but also appears as Hottle, Hottell, Hottal, Hoddle, Huddle, Huddell, and Huttel. I suspect the common Southern U.S. name Hutto, as well as Hott and Hutt, may also be variants. Hoedl or Hödl is a common name in Bavaria. Johannes and his wife were said to be Swiss, but they well could have originated in Bavaria and moved to Switzerland. Nothing is known of Johannes Hoedl’s parents. It is known, however, that Johannes had a brother Ulrich (see the end of the list).

. * John (Johannes Hoedl) Hottel (?-___-1700) - (?-___-1760) m. (?-___-1720) Elisabetha or Elizabetha ? (ca. 1700?) - (22-Dec-1726) (6th GREAT GRANDFATHER)

Buried in Hottel-Keller Cemetery, Mt. Olive, VA. Sailed on ship "Pennsylvania" to arrive at Ft. Philadelphia on 11 Sep 1732. Set sail from Rotterdam, Holland in June, 1732. Family settled in Northern Buck's Co., PA. German speakers. Either Lutheran (Reformed) or Mennonites. Family took oath of allegiance to crown of Great Britain. In 1750, Johannes and Margaret (his second wife), and children Carl, Jerick, and Anna emigrated to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Children Johannes and Heinrich remained in Pa. Many descendants of Johannes and Margaret in PA and the Shenandoah Valley today. Grave: 8/25/1995. There are also many descendants of Johannes and Margaret in Pennsylvania, and throughout the U.S. Nearly all the descendants of Johannes Hottel, (and most of the Snarrs and Kellers as well) and of his children Carl, Jerick, and Anna up till about 1930 are listed in History of the Descendants of John Hottel (1930) by W.D. and L.M. Huddle. Reprinted by the Higginson Book Co. Salem, MA. This book does not contain the descendants of Johannes the younger, and Heinrich, who remained in Pennsylvania when the rest of the family moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

A Brief Profile of Johannes Hodel (John Hottel) and Family

The following is paraphrased from The History of the Descendants of John Hottel and The New Hottel History - George Line. These books are available for purchase on the Gift Shop page.

Johannes Hodel was very likely born in Switzerland in approximately 1700. He and his wife, Elizabetha, were married in approximately 1720 and spent their early years together in Germany in the region of Alsheim bei Gronau, in the Rhineland-Pfalz (Palatinate), southwest of Manheim and northwest of Speyer. Although the tax record for 1722 listed the land as poor, Johannes and Elizabeth made their home on a 10-acre farm that included a 1/4-acre vineyard. The couple had five children:

[NOTE: These birth dates do not appear to be correct, and do not correspond to a birthdate of 1700 for John Hottel. Alternative dates are listed below in the body of the list of descendants. - RAW]

Anna Barbara (English name: Barbara), born Dec. 2, 1713

Johann Carl (English name: Charles), born Oct. 25, 1718

Johann Georg (English name: George), born Apr. 4, 1722

Catharina Elisabetha (English name: Elizabeth), born Nov. 17, 1725

Heinrich (English name: Henry), born 1726

On Dec. 22, 1726, a year after her last child was born, Elisabetha died and was buried at the Reformed Church in Alsheim bei Gronau.

Two years later, on June 23, 1728, Johannes married Maria Margaretha Steph Rheinwald (English name: Margaret) in the Reformed Church in Meckenheim, Germany. They had one son:

Johannes (English name: John Jr.), born October 27, 1731.

The following spring, Johannes and his family traveled down the Rhine River to Rotterdam, where they lived for approximately 3 years while arranging passage to America. In June or July of 1732, the family boarded the Pennsylvania Merchant and sailed to the New World, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1732.

Johannes purchased one hundred acres of land in Oley Township, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1734. On March 23, 1743, the land was repossessed after he was unable to keep up the payments.

Sometime during this period, daughter Barbara married George Keller (who had arrived in Philadelphia on October 11, 1732) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

In the early 1740s, sons Charles and George traveled to Virginia to look for new land to establish a family homestead. In 1750, they received land grants in what was then Frederick County (now Shenandoah County), Virginia from Lord Thomas Fairfax.

Charles and George then returned to Pennsylvania to help their father, mother, and sister Barbara (and husband, George) move to the new farm.

It is uncertain if John Jr. moved with them or stayed in Pennsylvania. He was not named in Johannes' will, so perhaps John Jr. predeceased his father. We do know that John Jr. married Mary Magdalene Musselman in 1748 and they had two sons: Michael born c. 1750 and Samuel born c. 1752.

Johannes lived the remainder of his years in Virginia. He died in 1760.

The photo appears to show a year of birth of 1862. This fits. Death appears to have been sometime in the 1940's. Wife's name is unclear on photo. . . . . . . . . * William Lee Walker (?-___-1934) - (?-___-1934) (UNCLE)

It is known that Jacob and Virginia Walker had a third child, younger than Marie. Venus Virginia Dove Walker told me, in approximately 1969, that the baby's name was William Lee Walker, that he was buried in Keyser, WV, and that he was several years younger than Marie. She said it was coincidence that Marie Walker Oldaker's first child had the same name. The baby was probably stillborn, but at any rate, he did not live beyond the day of his birth. Marie Walker Oldaker told me in 1995 that the baby was lost after Venus Virginia Dove Walker was knocked down on the street by a drunken man.
