DESCENDANTS OF: Henry Dove (1723-1801) and Margaret Witmyer AS RELATED TO: Robert Andrew Walker (his great-great-great-great-grandson)

Updated April 27, 2009

The number of periods preceding the asterisk (*) before a name indicates to which generation the person belongs. The first generation is the original Henry Dove, (1723-1801). His son, George Dove, my great great great grandfather, and his brothers and sisters, are preceded by a single period and then the asterisk, indicating that he belongs to the second generation. George Washington Dove (1831-1911), my great grandfather, is preceded by three periods and then the asterisk, and belongs to the fourth generation, etc. My generation is preceded by 6 periods and an asterisk, thus indicating we are the 7th generation to follow Henry Dove. All relationships are calculated as related to me. Add or subtract "greats" as appropriate. If an individual has had more than one spouse, the first marriage is listed first, followed by all children of that marriage, and then the second spouse is listed, and the children of that marriage are then listed, and so on.

Likely born in Rockingham County, VA. Buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland, MD. Had lived in Moorefield, WV, but moved to Cumberland, MD in the early 20th century. William Ambrose gives George Washington Dove's dates as 1836-1908. Dates listed above derived from the United States 1910 census. I have found, however, that the information from older U.S. censuses is by no means infallible. M. (11-1-1888) Sally Venus Thomas (17-Feb-1869) - (19-Feb-1912) (my great-grandmother). Venus Virginia Dove Walker, on 9/19/1992, recalled that he was a soldier in the Civil War, and that he fought for the South. He was at Gettysburg. 1910 US census says he was born in VA. According to Venus Virginia Dove Walker, he wore a long beard, and hunted for subsistence, often caching game in snow banks. Was 79 at the time of the 1910 U.S. Census. According to census, this was his second marriage. It also records an eighth birth to him and Sally. Apparently, this child did not live. Visited grave on 8/24/95. Learned in late 2000 from the Joshua Lynn Ambrose web page that Sally Thomas was indeed his second wife, and that his first wife was Elizabeth Halterman, and that they had 7 children in addition to George and Sally Dove's 7 children.

Known of only from 1910 census, which lists 8 births and 7 living children to George and Sally Dove. Placed in birth order between Grace and Jemima because there was a five-year gap there between births. Only two years between births of the first five children, and three years between the births of Jemima and Venus, the two youngest. 1900 is thus a best guess as to year of birth.

It is known that Jacob and Virginia Walker had a third child, younger than Marie. Venus Virginia Dove Walker told me, in approximately 1969, that the baby's name was William Lee Walker, that he was buried in Keyser, WV, and that he was several years younger than Marie. She said it was coincidence that Marie Walker Oldaker's first child had the same name. The baby was probably stillborn, but at any rate, he did not live beyond the day of his birth. Marie Walker Oldaker told me in 1995 that the baby was lost after Venus Virginia Dove Walker was knocked down on the street by a drunken man.
